Finch, past master, will act as installing officer when the Blyck Mountain Lodge No. 663 AF and AM holds installation ceremonies at the Masonic hall at 8 p. m. Friday. CLUB MEETS THURSDAY The Swannanoa Garden club will meet Thursday, January 6, at the home of Mrs. W. B. Stone. Mrs. W. H. McMurray will have charge of the program. The subject being “Antiques”, each member is asked to bring one small antique to this meeting. The chairman urges all members to be present. Lewis of Swan nanoq who has been in the Swan nanoa division of Oteen VA hos pital, was home from Wednesday until Sunday. He recently under went an operation on his ankle. Legion Dumps Rockets In Opening Round The black Mountain American Legion hoopsters knocked Old Fort out of the running in the opening round of the Valley Springs holi day invitational tournament Mon day night, 64 to 36. Ellington, in fantry reserve of Ellington Studios has been recalled to active duty for a period of three months. He will serve in Asheville. Veteran of the Pacific area, Captain Ellington will be stat ioned with the Asheville military sub-district at the Asheville city hall building and will assist with the reserve program. While the owner and manager is away on active duty, Ellington Studios will be under the direction of Floyd Gill. Captain Ellington will be in the studio on Saturdays and will continue to make his home in Black Mountain while on active duty with the army. RETURN FROM RICHMOND Mr. and Mrs. Borden Sabiston and daughter Celeste returned Monday from a visit to Richmond, Va. Pay Only 5c County Well Represented At Berea College Buncombe county is well repre sented on the campus of Berea college in Berea, Kentucky. Fifty four students are enrolled there this semester from this county. Twelve of these are from Black Mountain. Berea college is known national ly and internationally for its con tribution to the solution of basic problems in the Southern Ap palachian territory. Starting with one small building in 1855, it now has approximately 100 buildings with a campus of 140 acres, is served by its own water supply, its own heat and power plant. Over 1400 students are enrolled. More than 90"" come from 230 mountain counties from eight Southern states. Each student is guaranteed at least 10 hours of labor per week. No dormitory stu dents works less. There is no tui tion and a student may earn a part or all of his expenses. To provide enough labor for all, the college has created the Stu dent Industries. Among these are the bakery, candy kitchen, print ing shop, the needlecraft, broom craft, fireside weaving, mountain weavers, the Boone tavern (col lege hotel) and the dairy, farm and creamery. In its academic program, Berea college stresses the Liberal Arts in cluding music and the fine arts, ag riculture, home economics, and nursing. In its secondary school the curriculum is planned to serve well the students who are definitely pre paring for college and also to give sound education to those for whom high school is terminal. Staffers Visit At Blue Ridge Former members of the staff at Blue Ridge Assembly are complet ing a four day retreat reunion to renew friendships and mountain top experiences, H. W. Sanders, resident manager, said today. The conference was held December 26- 30 inclusive. Acting as chaperons for the group, which has been staying at Kentucky cottage, are Mr. and Mi’s. Edison Lewis of Buckroe Beach, Va„ and Mrs. S. O. Robertson of Augusta, Ga. MEETS JANUARY 7 The regular meeting of the Faircloth-Dixon unit of the hu mane society will be held at the Black Mountain city hall on Fri day, January 7.
